Men's Skincare for Dark Skin: What You Need to Know

Most men's skincare content is

HOW DARK SKIN IS DIFFERENT

More melanin, and what that means

Darker skin contains more melanin 
and more active melanocytes, 
the cells that produce it. This 
has real advantages: stronger 
natural UV protection, slower 
visible aging, and less baseline 
sensitivity than lighter skin tones.

It also means melanin overproduction 
is a more common and more stubborn 
problem. Post-inflammatory 
hyperpigmentation, the dark 
marks left after a breakout, 
razor bump, cut, or any skin 
inflammation, is more pronounced, 
takes longer to fade, and is 
more easily triggered by the 
wrong skincare ingredients.

Stronger natural UV protection, 
but not enough

Melanin provides natural SPF 
equivalent to roughly SPF 13 
in very dark skin tones, 
meaningful protection compared 
to zero, but not sufficient 
for the prolonged unprotected 
sun exposure that causes 
cumulative UV damage.

Dark skin accumulates UV damage 
too, it just appears differently.

High-concentration synthetic 
salicylic acid (above 1%)

At high concentrations, synthetic 
salicylic acid can cause 
post-exfoliation inflammation 
in dark skin, triggering 
the PIH it was meant to 
treat. Products marketed 
aggressively for oily skin 
and breakouts often use 
2% salicylic acid, which 
is too aggressive for 
daily use on dark skin tones.

Benzoyl peroxide

Effective for acne but known 
to cause significant irritation 
and dryness in dark skin, 
increasing PIH risk. If used, 
should be limited to spot 
treatment at low concentrations 
(2.5%) rather than applied 
broadly across the face.

Retinol at high concentrations

Retinol accelerates cell 
turnover and can be effective 
for dark spots, but at high 
concentrations it causes 
the irritation and peeling 
that triggers PIH in dark 
skin. If using retinol, 
start at the lowest available 
concentration and introduce 
gradually.

Physical scrubs

The micro-tears caused by 
abrasive physical scrubs 
create exactly the kind 
of skin trauma that leads 
to PIH in dark skin. 
Chemical exfoliation, 
through White Willow Bark 
or gentle acids, is 
significantly safer.

Synthetic fragrance

The number one cause of 
contact dermatitis in 
skincare. The resulting 
inflammation from a 
fragrance reaction causes 
PIH in dark skin. Avoid 
any product listing 
"fragrance" or "parfum" 
without specificity.


THE ROUTINE FOR DARK SKIN

The goal for men with dark skin 
is a routine that addresses 
existing hyperpigmentation, 
prevents new PIH formation, 
and never triggers the 
inflammation that creates 
the problem in the first place.

Morning:
